We are glad you are interested! It is our goal to have every secondary student in Katy ISD reading during the summer months. We simply want you to choose books you want to read!
How does the challenge work?
- Read books that interest you! You will get a text message on Tuesdays with some suggestions; you don't have to read those- they are just an option. You can also look on the "Lists and Resources" tab of this website for more suggestions. Regardless of how you find the titles, read for authentic purposes.
- Challenge yourself to read at least five books this summer to reach that HIGH 5!
- Share what you read with others-- talk about your books, tweet about your books with #KatyISDReads, Instagram your books with #KatyISDReads, and log what you read on our form (see below).
- Keep track of what you read. You will get a text message on Sundays as a reminder to log any book you've finished. Click here to log your finished books.
Tweet about what you're reading! Use the hashtag:

FAQs
What books should I read?
- Whatever you want! This challenge is for you to READ something YOU PICK over the summer. We will text you some suggestions, but you can read whatever you want.
Where can I get books?
- Public libraries have great teen summer reading programs. Please see the tab "Lists and Resources" above for more information.
Do I have to read the suggested books from the text message?
- No! It's just a suggestion. Read what you like. Read what you're interested in. Read something you will get lost in. Just read.
Why should I track books?
- All participants who log five books will receive a certificate of recognition. That's one reason. Another is that we would love to know how many books Katy ISD students are reading over the summer.
Why should I track books?
- No. The Twitter hashtag is just one more fun way to interact and share the books we are reading, but it is not a requirement.
What are the text messages like?
- It will be from Remind (directions on how to join are on the tab above). You will get two texts per week: Sundays (a reminder to log books finished) and Tuesdays (a fiction or nonfiction recommendation).
I don't have a cellphone. Can I still participate?
- Yes. Yes. Yes! If your parents have a cellphone, then they could sign up for the Remind messages. Or, you can just use the form found here to log your books all summer long!
Does it really matter what grade level I sign up for?
- The reason for signing up for a grade level is because the book suggestions are geared more toward that grade. Of course, there are 7th grade books that might interest a 6th grader, etc. so it is not a huge deal.
I am a teacher. Can I sign up?
- Absolutely! Sign up and tweet about the books you are reading using the hashtag: #katyisdreads.
I am a parent. Can I sign up?
- Absolutely! Sign up and encourage your child to read and then log his or her books when finished.
I am a parent. How can I get my child to read more?
- Model for your child that reading is fun. Let your child pick books around his/her interests. Read with your child. Take your child to the library. Encourage conversations about the books you are reading. Click here and here for more ideas.
