Welcome to Flipping Pages! I’m Kim Warwick and I’ll be spending my summer with you talking about books, which is my favorite thing to talk about. I’ve been in education for 25 years. I was in the classroom for 21 years where I taught several elementary grades and every grade of junior high in the area of reading and English. Four years ago, I became a librarian and I love my job! I enjoy helping readers find the right book for them and I hope I can do that for you this summer. Enough about me – let’s talk about books.
We are going to start the summer off with the mystery genre. Think about the summer as being a mystery; you just aren’t sure what’s in store for you. It could be going to grandma’s house and searching through the attic for treasures. It could be going to some place new. It could be staying at home curled up with a book where you meet new characters and travel to new places. So investigate my suggestions and see if there’s something you might like. I look forward to the spending the summer with you.

Note: We've linked each title to its Amazon page so you may read other's reviews. These books are also available at the public libraries.
This genre is good for readers who enjoy suspense and solving puzzles. It is a type of narrative fiction which involves a crime or death that needs to be solved. Often considered a detective story however it doesn’t have to involve a professional; many times it is the main character who acts as the detective. Famous authors in this genre would be Agatha Christie, Caroline Cooney, James Patterson, Harlan Coben, and Ally Carter.
THE LONDON EYE MYSTERY by Siobhan Dowd

SECRET, SILENT SCREAMS by Joan Lowery-Nixon
Marti, a high school senior, is crushed when she finds out her childhood friend Barry has committed suicide. However, Marti doesn’t think Barry would kill himself so she starts her own investigation in to find his murderer.
Joan Lowery-Nixon was an award winning author who wrote many other books. If you like this one, try more of her books.
TRUST ME, I’M LYING by Mary Elizabeth Summer
Trust me, I’m not lying when I say this debut novel is a mix of adventure, humor, romance and mystery. Julep Dupree is a liar who is also trained in the family business of grifting. Which means she swindles money in order to pay the bills. One day Julep comes home to a ransacked apartment and a missing father. She teams up with two of her friends in order to find her dad. Of course this mission involves cons and schemes.
If you can’t get enough of Julep’s cons, read the sequel TRUST ME, I’M TROUBLE.
THE NATURALS by Jennifer Lynn Barnes
Think of this novel as CRIMINAL MINDS for teens. Cassie is a seventeen year old who is a natural at reading people. She is recruited by the FBI to be part of a team of teens who will try to solve cold cases.
So far there are three books in this series plus the author has a new book titled THE FIXER.
If mystery isn’t your thing, perhaps try this informational text:
QUIET POWER: THE SECRET STRENGTHS OF INTROVERTS by Susan Cain
This best-selling adult author brings her ideas to tweens and teens. She offers advice to young readers on how to connect with the world that won’t quit talking. There are real life stories from teens along with tips at the end of each chapter. The book also includes a guide for parents to help them understand their introverted children.
Have fun reading and I’ll be back next week talking about Science Fiction and Fantasy. I promise it will be out of this world.
