Getting the 4-1-1 is a slang term meaning to get information. Think of it as what we did before we had Siri or even Google. With that in mind, this week we are going to look at informational books.
Informational Texts
Note: We've linked each title to its Amazon page so you may read other's reviews. These books are also available at the public libraries and great local bookstores such as Blue Willow Bookshop and Katy Budget Books.
Informational books are part of the non-fiction genre. They inform the reader about the natural or social world. Specialized or technical vocabulary can be used in the book. Instead of “Googling” or “Asking Siri” let’s try reading a book to find something out.
CHOCOLATE: SWEET SCIENCE & DARK SECRETS OF THE WORLD’S FAVORITE TREAT by Kay Frydenborg
The title does a great job of summing this book up. Along with explaining the history of chocolate it also examines the health benefits of chocolate. It includes timelines, photos and even recipes. Hope you enjoy this sweet treat.
THE GOOD, THE BAD & THE BARBIE: A DOLL’S HISTORY AND HER IMPACT ON US by Tanya Lee Stone
Again, the title says a lot. There’s a love/hate relationship between people and Barbie. This book examines both sides. There is no denying that Barbie has had a role in fashion and has been a long lasting toy. Readers can learn how she became the icon she is and even read other people’s memories of their experiences with Barbie.
FAMILY ROMANOV: MURDER, REBELLION, & THE FALL OF IMPERIAL RUSSIA by Candace Fleming
This is the story of the last Imperial family of Russia. Many people have been intrigued after the discovery of the family’s mass grave and rumors of Duchess Anastasia’s survival. The book also looks at the Russian people of the time and their social conditions. There is also information about the Revolutionary leaders of that time.
If you get caught in an information overload, try taking a break with this thrilling mystery.
COLD CALLS by Charles Benoit
This is the story of three high school students who don’t really know each other and have nothing in common except for a phone call. Each person received a call from a mysterious person who started the conversation with “I know your secret.” Each of them is instructed to do some type of bullying in order to keep their secret secret. Do they keep their secrets safe or do they go against the mysterious caller’s demands?
Hopefully, I’ve given you a title or two to add to your list. Enjoy reading in order to get the scoop and I’ll see you next week. I’ll be sharing historical fiction titles with you then. Keep flipping those pages before this summer is history.
