Welcome back to the second week of Flipping Pages! Last week we investigated the genre of mystery and hopefully you found something you liked. Let’s take a break from reality and explore the world of science fiction and fantasy.
Science Fiction/Fantasy
Note: We've linked each title to its Amazon page so you may read other's reviews. These books are also available at the public libraries.
What is science fiction?
It is a type of fiction which involves the technology and science of the future. It can have time travel, space travel, and extraterrestrial life. The stories are often set in the future, in space or other worlds. Usually part of the story is science-based fact or theory.
How is science fiction different from fantasy?
Fantasy is a type of fiction that uses magic or other supernatural elements. Settings of the stories can be in imaginary worlds and have magical creatures or talking animals.
These two genres are usually grouped together because once science fiction becomes totally unbelievable it moves to the fantasy genre.
MARK OF THE THIEF by Jennifer Neilsen
Many readers fell in love with this author’s Ascendance trilogy which started with THE FALSE PRINCE. Her new book is a genre mash-up of history, fantasy and action/adventure. Nic, a slave being forced to work in the mines of the
Roman Empire discovers a magical amulet. This makes Nic the most wanted fugitive in Rome. Will Nic escape his enemies and become a free man? You can find out more about Nic by reading book two: RISE OF THE WOLF, which just came out this spring.
BEASTLY by Alex Flinn
BEASTLY is a modern day version of Beauty and the Beast. The story is told from the point of view of the beast who is a rich, good-looking, popular private school student. This is definitely a new twist to an old story since it’s told from the boy’s point of view. In 2011, it was made into a movie but you know the book is better.
Alex Flinn is well known for her retellings of well-known fairy tales. Be sure to check out Flinn’s other retellings like: CLOAKED, MIRRORED and A KISS IN TIME.
ADORATION OF JENNA FOX by Mary E. Pearson
Jenna doesn’t recognize herself when she wakes up after being in a coma for over a year. The seventeen year old watches home movies but still doesn’t remember much. Finally she has some flashbacks which help her to start piecing together clues about the horrible accident that left her in a coma. This story is a mix of science fiction and medical thriller.
There are two more books about Jenna: THE FOX INHERITANCE and FOX FOREVER. You might want to also check out the author’s series the Remnant Chronicles which starts with THE KISS OF DECEPTION.
UNREMEMBERED by Jessica Brody
A sixteen year old girl is the lone survivor of a tragic airplane crash. She has no memory of her life before the accident. There are no records of her being a passenger on the plane and her fingerprints do not show up in any government database. Follow Violet through her journey to find out who she really is and then you can find out more by reading UNFORGOTTEN and UNCHANGED.
Jessica Brody also has some great teen realistic fiction that’s worth checking out.
Speaking of realistic fiction. Maybe you like it more than science fiction and fantasy, if so give THE
HONEST TRUTH by Dan Gemeinhart a try.
This is the story of Mark and his trusty dog who run away from home in order to climb Mt. Rainier. Everyone back home is very worried about him, especially since he’s the “sick kid with cancer”. His best friend, Jessie, knows where Mark has gone but is torn over telling the truth.
You might want to spend the summer reading a book before it hits the big screen in the fall.
MISS PEREGRINE’S HOME FOR PECULIAR CHILDREN by Ransom Riggs
This is a mix of mystery and fantasy where sixteen year old Jacob finds himself trying to cope with his grandfather’s death by exploring the Welsh island where his grandfather grew up. While on the island, he discovers the orphanage where his grandfather was sent in order to escape the Nazis. All the children in the home were said to have special talents. Jacob meets Emma who helps his time travel back to 1940 where he meets Miss Peregrine and some of her peculiar children. Vintage photographs are used throughout the book to help create the identities of these special children. Of course, you are going to be hooked and want more. Luckily, there are two more books in the series: HOLLOW CITY and THE LIBRARY OF SOULS.
Start flipping some pages so that you travel to another world and escape reality but come back next week ready for some fun. I’ll be talking about books which will literally make you laugh out loud. Yes, there is a genre just for humor!
